Training for a big race takes a certain level of commitment. Slogging through months of long runs in the bitter winter cold or the blistering heat of summer is just the beginning. Sometimes family events contend for time with training sessions. Our wallets can take a hit, too. We don't just need shoes. We need good socks, and proper fitting tech gear. We need lotions and gels and water bottles. We need hats and jackets and flashing lights. If our races are out of town, we need to think about travel and time off from work. There are hotel rooms to book and restaurants to scout out. There are sight to see.
Lost in all the race preparation can be the minutiae of what to pack. We think so much about that finish line that we forget to plan for the starting line. Too many of us have made it through airport security only to realize we forgot to pack the shoes. Too many of us have packed only hot weather gear and find ourselves in a late season snow storm.
Don't be miserable, and cold, and wet and covered with blistered. If you're going to spend months in training, running hundreds of miles and spending plenty of money, why not spend a little time planning your marathon suitcase? Here's a handy list to help you plan your destination race.
