Chug-A-Lug: Five Easy Ways to Hydrate

Hydrating. You know you need to do it. You just have other things to do besides gulp water and use the bathroom all day long. The staff at Fleet Feet knows your burden; if you've been at one of our stores at peak hours, you know how busy we can get. We have a few tips and tricks to make sure we sip fluids throughout the day so we can hit the trails and streets ready to rock and roll.

Set a small, attainable, measurable goal.

Every good habit starts this way; with baby steps. If you drink too much soda or coffee, try replacing one cup or can a day with 8 ounces of water. If you don't drink much water at all, add one glass to every meal. Set your goal and track your progress, and soon it will be a daily habit.

Keep a bottle full of water and make it your goal to finish it before lunch or bedtime.

It's easy to become distracted in the day, but making time to fill up on water can actually make you more productive. Studies indicate that replacing an afternoon energy drink or cup of coffee with a glass of water can increase energy and focus in the same way, but without the sugar high. Take a drink every hour or so. If this is a new habit, set a timer to remind yourself. Drink 4 to 6 ounces of water before every meal. Make a game of it by drinking some water after you check your morning emails or after every phone call.

Make it First

Studies suggest that drinking water first thing in the morning can assist in waking us up and refreshing us. While we sleep, our bodies recover from the day and this takes energy, which takes fuel. Consider drinking a full glass of water before every meal, too. This does two things: it keeps you hydrated and it prevents overeating, which is key if you're trying to stay in (or get in, ahem) racing shape.

Mix It Up

At Fleet Feet, we don't just drink water. We add electrolytes to our drinks not just because we know that we lose more than just water when we workout. We straight up get tired of drinking boring old water all. day. long. Try some of the Nuun or Skratch flavors during your day so can decide which ones you like before trusting a new flavor on a long workout day. If you do add electrolytes on a daily basis, we suggest minimizing this as while they can be helpful, you'll also be adding sodium and other minerals you may want to keep in check.

Get Fancy

If you still like plain water, consider adding some of your favorite herbs to your water bottle and infusing it overnight. We like basil/citrus blends, mint/cucumber, and lemon/ginger. To do this simply fill your water bottle half full with ice, then fill with sliced fruit or veggies and freshly cut herbs. Top off with water and place in the fridge. In the morning, you'll have a fancy, spa-like beverage to sip on throughout the day.

Staying hydrated through the day benefits your health and your fitness. Hydrated cells and muscles are less likely to cramp, therefore are less prone to injury. A hydrated body is more alert, more in control of appetite and more efficient. It can be a drag to train your body to drink more, but it can be done. How do you stay hydrated?
